Bridgman reviewed More Die of Heartbreak by Saul Bellow
Review of 'More Die of Heartbreak' on 'Goodreads'
5 stars
As a novel, I give More Die of Heartbreak four stars. As a novel for me, I'd give it two.
I'd use all the phrases people too dumb to read literary works would apply: It was "inaccessible," "obtuse." But that's me, a dumb guy. Smart people will agree with the blurbs on the cover of the copy here: "Brilliant and funny."—The New York Times; "Crackles with intelligence and wit."—Time; "It sparkles."—The Washington Post.
The main character/narrator's ex-lover puts how I felt well in her response to something he says to her that goes over her head:
"You've just given a perfect demonstration of what makes you hard to be with—drop you a hint and you carry it all over the place. It makes a woman feel she's slow-witted."
Touché.
I'm sorry I didn't enjoy reading it more.
