4 stars
I almost downgraded to 3 stars because Im not sure I can call this book original. It treads over ground that has been covered many times before. But I have to give credit as it is a book that is better for its main characters being middle aged adults who have life mostly figured out and yet still find parts of themselves and others to be confused about. They are mature, so nothing comes as a surprise to them, except perhaps they’re own uncertainty. And yet all of them manage to meet the difficulties life throws at them with steady competency, even as things continue to change. One of the most insightful explorations of adulthood I’ve ever read. The glances into the lives of the women who rent the house are far less steady, but their presence reveals that the resiliency exhibited by the other characters is often hard won.
