Dr Jonathan Murray is a single father caring for his newborn daughter, Sophie. Left behind as a teenager when his own parents emigrated to New Zealand, he has few pointers - and the time he spent with Sophie's mother has left him afraid of the power their child may unleash as she develops... Sammy Agnew put his violent and bloody past behind him when he and his wife had children; the eldest, Mark, still lives a nocturnal existence in the attic upstairs. But Sammy fears that his son may have inherited the anger that he himself, at times, can barely suppress... As matters fall into frenzy with the city in flames - and as the lines between fantasy and truth, right and wrong, begin to blur - who will these two fathers choose to protect?

Review of 'Fire Starters' on 'Goodreads'

Jan Carson has fascinatingly used the annual madness around the 12th of July in Belfast to share an intriguing story about parents react to and resolve their relationships with their “unfortunate” children. A terrific read, among the best novels I’ve read in a long time.
