Review of 'My Italian Bulldozer' on 'Goodreads'

I'm honestly not sure what the appeal of Alexander McCall Smith is. I've read a handful of his books from a variety of his series and they all seem very the same. This is a man who likes to navel gaze about anything and everything and I just find it tiring. I imagine there's a reader who enjoys these sedate books, but I typically want a bit more action than this book provided. I picked My Italian Bulldozer up because it was the prequel to [b:The Second Worst Restaurant in France|40770839|The Second Worst Restaurant in France (Paul Stuart, #2)|Alexander McCall Smith|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1531182477l/40770839.SY75.jpg|63457768] and the synopsis for that book seemed interesting, but now I'm not sure.
