An interesting book. Set in 1850 in eastern Maryland, in a mix of white and black and free and slave, and a young woman with visions and a mission for tomorrow. Some of the characters existed solely to be villains, but many were well-drawn. The tracked and their trackers flitted this way and that along the Chesapeake, crossing paths or nearly missing, until the boiling climax, in which everyone converged on a small speck of land.
The action was rousing. The backdrop was rich. I could've done without the visions though. Giving a 19th century slave glimpses of 20th century America was awkward and felt like a cheat. But it was also the prime mover of the plot, and the reason for most of Liz's actions.
