Like Daniel Mendelsohn’s The Lost, this is the story of a second-generation Holocaust survivor’s attempt to piece together a hidden part of her own history. Mendelsohn’s fantastic book is both harder to read in places and also more of an adventure. Still, this is a fascinating tale not only of a family’s experiences as they survived Hitler and rebuilt their lives elsewhere, but also of a woman’s search to uncover that tale and the people and places she encountered in her search.
