The first half of this book is reasonably interesting as it details the lives of a suburban family. It created an interesting picture. But at a certain point, the book gets rather strange with the introduction of a rather outlandish character, and it became unconvincing and even silly. I feel that Cheever had some personal insight to the early characters, but that he was trying to imagine the later one, and wound up with characters that don't belong in a book together. Unfortunately, the mildly favorable impression I'd had of the book had pretty much gone away by the end.
