The Laconian Empire has fallen, setting the thirteen hundred solar systems free from the rule of Winston Duarte. But the ancient enemy that killed the gate builders is awake, and the war against our universe has begun again.

In the dead system of Adro, Elvi Okoye leads a desperate scientific mission to understand what the gate builders were and what destroyed them, even if it means compromising herself and the half-alien children who bear the weight of her investigation. Through the wide-flung systems of humanity, Colonel Aliana Tanaka hunts for Duarte’s missing daughter. . . and the shattered emperor himself. And on the Rocinante, James Holden and his crew struggle to build a future for humanity out of the shards and ruins of all that has come before.

As nearly unimaginable forces prepare to annihilate all human life, Holden and a group of unlikely allies discover a last, desperate chance …

And thus does the formerly amazing "The Expanse" end not with a bang but with a whimper

2022 reads, #2. DID NOT FINISH. And so do my four years with "The Expanse" series of science-fiction novels end; as the saying goes, not with a bang but with a whimper. And that's because I was legitimately thrilled and excited when reading the first three volumes of this nine-book series and discovering one of the more complex and fascinating genre universes and alt-history storylines I've ever seen; set 300 years in the future when humanity has finally colonized the entire solar system, it creates a whole new series of mashup cultures for each planet and moon that interact and play with each other in these interesting, delightful ways, all of it made even more complicated by the first-ever discovery of proof of alien life, which sets all of these established cultures on even greater paths of conflict and change. Not for nothing did the initial work on this mythos …

I don't really know what I expected in this 'the final book' of the Expanse series. Whatever it was, this wrap-up novel was a bit disappointing. The novel is not bad, but it lacked the energy of the earlier volumes. The finale does wrap things up rather well, for that I'm thankful. The series has been a true joy to read. Quite the adventure.

James does the series justice. There had to be a place to land it and I think it achieved it's goals. This has been such a nice run with such a rich story. A story I constantly say is about people. Not space. It's about human problems, with some alien voodoo mixed in, but it's always driving towards understanding ourselves. Our greatness, and that which is deplorable--or questionable--and the forever grey shades in between.

"I'll be here," Alex said, and it felt more like a prayer than it usually did.

There it is, The Expanse has come to an end. It will be difficult to review this book without considering how it concluded the series and wrapped up loose ends. The final book in a series has a significant amount of pressure to stick the landing and I'm content with how it went.

"He hasn't changed," Alex said. "Not really."

"He has," she said. "We all have."

Looking back over my reviews of the previous books I found more comments about family and connection than science, space battles and protomolocule. The latter is excellent and there have been some doozies, but the books have always been about the crew of the Rocinante and the authors didn't deviate from that recipe this time around. Thankfully there was a bit more focus on the big …
