Coetzee dares to imagine the life of Dostoevsky, whom we watch as he obsessively follows his stepson’s ghost, trying to ascertain whether he was a suicide or a murder victim, and whether he loved or despised his stepfather. The novel is at once a compelling mystery steeped in the atmosphere of pre-revolutionary Russia, and a brilliant and courageous meditation on authority and rebellion, art and imagination.

Leyendo esta novela sobre la búsqueda que emprende Dostoievsky de su hijo muerto (de su memoria, de su legado, de su desatendida responsabilidad como padre, de las razones de su muerte) me ha venido a la memoria una frase de Tom Waits: El mundo es un lugar infernal, y la mala escritura está destruyendo la calidad de nuestro sufrimiento.

Bueno, pues si alguna vez te parece que tu sufrimiento es monótono, superficial o adocenado te recomiendo una zambullida en las muchas y variadas capas del dolor del protagonista.

Coetzee también perdió a su hijo con la edad del de El maestro de Petersburgo, así que habla de primera mano. Lo admirable es cómo logra sobreponerse a él para desmenuzárnoslo con tanta viveza.
