4.00 I'm starting to have a real love-hate relationship with novellas - especially Tor hardcovers with a protective cover like this one or the Murderbot series. Even when the books are very good - like this one - it feels quite like a scam to pay 20 € for your copy. I realise that almost half the problem is shipping and handling, but there really should be a better way of selling novellas than sticking the paltry 160 to 180 pages between even more expensive covers.

With that out of the way, be aware that while this is a lesbian Western story, it's also alternate history or at least alternate future, which is a plus for me, but your mileage may vary. It certainly adds to the alienation the reader feels and Sarah Gailey sure manages to paint a jarring picture that is neither quite The Handmaid's Tale nor A …

You'd think a novella set in a far-future version of the USA in which its infrastructure has decayed to the point of turning it into the wild west and rogue librarians turned freedom fighters smuggle anti-state contraband and fight to liberate people from the oppression of a fascist dictatorial government would be pretty good.

And you'd be right, it is sick as hell.

Upright Women Wanted is a hopeful story about finding people like us in unexpected but wonderful places. The best parts of a western in the gaps of the post-apocalypse set against the specter of a vague forever-war. A scrappy novella with a big heart.

I know I love most things I read, but I needed something happy right now and this was just the ticket. It's about people in the gaps, the spaces between what's supposed to happen and the edge of the next set of rules, the next scrutinizing town. It takes the wildness and danger of a Western and gives it a modern framing with a post-apocalyptic flair. Some of the backstories are either implicitly or explicitly filled with some terrible events, but it strikes a balance between showing and telling that leaves the really bad stuff to the imagination.
