To break an ancient curse she must let her power bloom.

Briseis has a gift. She can grow an apple tree from seed in a heartbeat, and flowers bloom at her touch. And when she inherits an old house, she suddenly has the privacy to test her powers for the first time. But as Bri starts to magic the house's rambling grounds back to life, she finds she has also inherited generations of secrets. In a hidden garden overgrown with the most deadly poisonous plants on earth a dark legacy lies waiting for her. And Bri's long-departed ancestors won't let her rest until she finds it.

When I first read this book I had NO idea that it was a series. I will say it ends on a cliffhanger, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next one.

The premise is an adopted black girl from Brooklyn learns she's heir to a house and duty: an apothecary for the townsfolk. And that her magic powers with plants and immunity to poisons is traced through her lineage.

Her adopted family is so sweet and supportive. Her love interest is a bit different than I'm used to, but not necessarily in a bad way.

This goes deep into Greek Mythology and plays, and does its own plausible interpretation. Also the book was very clear that Achilles was more than friends with his BFF Patroclus, so it gets points for that alone.

This has a wonderful voice, and I feel a little guilty giving it only 4 stars. I'll probably bump …
