I wanted to give three and a half, but I can't :) Okay, so, This is a four star book - I enjoyed the story a lot. It was well paced although rarely surprising. The reason I'm docking a star is because I never felt the story was taking place in Victorian London, but rather in a Star Trek Holodeck or Disney movie of Victorian London. The occasional lapse into modern dialogue, a profound misunderstanding of currency (three months salary casually dropped in a charity jar? really?) and a very limited number of stereotyped locations really shattered the illusion. This COULD be because I've read a lot of actual Victorian fiction.
Regardless of the above, I will be reading the next in the series in the hope that the author settles into his stride :)
