I love the rich world building and character development. The politics of humans and dragons still trying to find a peaceful coexistence on the fortieth anniversary of the peace treaty that put an end to the constant warfare was fascinating. Yet more refreshing to me than any of those things was the fact that I actually like Seraphina. Maybe it's just that I've read a lot of young adult fantasy lately and have lost my taste for the angst of youth that causes so many young adult protagonists to bug the crap out of me. Sure, we still hit all the high points of young adult novels. Our girl is a fish out of water because of her mixed race. She is a prodigy who surpasses all rivals with apparent ease as though her musicianship has supernatural origins, or at least a deep generic basis. There might even be star-crossed love in a triangular shape. Bit this girl has a personality and some charm. She has interesting perspective and is capable of sustaining thought. There are blessedly few temper tantrums or eye rolls. I actually became invested in her struggles to bridge the gap between husband and dragons.
