The aircraft involved in the crash of Flight 4184 was an ATR-72 turboprop. This model, designed and manufactured by a European consortium, had a history of performance problems in icing conditions - the same conditions that prevailed on the day of the Indiana crash. Despite this knowledge, aviation officials downplayed the ATR-72's troubles, even after the tragedy, but eventually grounded the aircraft.
