Review of 'Tales of the City' on 'Goodreads'

This is a soap opera, condensed into a book. You can see why the people who read it in weekly installments when it was being published in the paper would have been caught up - the characters would have been a fun lark to follow week-to-week, and the name-dropping/place-dropping of real local people/places would have felt like rich color as it was happening. Decades after the fact, and strung together in book form, it didn't really work for me, as much as I wanted it to.
