Ben Waber reviewed Unwell Women by Elinor Cleghorn
An Enlightening and Disturbing Book
5 stars
This book is one of the most compelling scientific histories I've ever read, tracing the history of how Western medicine understood women from antiquity to the present. What emerges is an incredibly disturbing picture, with profound disregard, disinterest, and occasional malice mixed with deep-seated sexism leading to ridiculously inaccurate and nearly always profoundly harmful medical diagnoses and treatments of women. Even more troubling is the throughline of that approach to present day medicine, not only in the paucity of research in ailments that tend to be more common in women but also in how the profession and broader medical industry understands female symptoms. This has obvious implications for people in the field but also lessons for anyone who deals with human-related health data. Highly recommend
