Variety not to everyone's tastes

Perhaps appropriate given the title, my wife read it first and suggested I skip the first two stories that she had not cared for. I found them a couple of the better ones in this collection. The final novella, some of whose characters have apparently appeared in other Towles works, inspired me to take up reading old mysteries again.
