The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (original title in Swedish: Män som hatar kvinnor, lit. 'Men Who Hate Women') is a psychological thriller novel by Swedish author and journalist Stieg Larsson (1954–2004). It was published posthumously in 2005, translated into English in 2008, and became an international bestseller. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is the first book of the Millennium series. Originally a trilogy by Larsson, the series was expanded to another three books by David Lagercrantz, and as of 2021 rights had been sold for Karin Smirnoff to pen three more.

I spent 4 hours finishing the book, then I went for a run.

5 stars

The first half captured me, the second half was…insane. I picked an intense read for my first fiction book in years. When I finished, all I could do was grab my running shoes and go for a run, even though I already ran in the morning. It was a lot to process, and I needed the run to work through it.

Heavy, dark, insightful, scary, and beautiful. So happy I read it. And the broad theme of violence (and hatred) towards women is beautifully crafted into the story.

Review of 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium, #1)' on 'Storygraph'

2 stars

After turning the last page of this book, I was a bit dumbfounded -- not by the ending, but by the hype surrounding it. The writing is not particularly compelling, although that may be a function of translation. The characters are believable yet only somewhat likable, as most of them remain at an emotional distance from the reader and from each other. The plot drags on for most of the book, and plods along to an ultimately unsatisfying resolution. Had I not already purchased the second book in the series, I would not continue.
