The Age of Napoleon surveys the amazing chain of events that wrenched Europe out of the Enlightenment and into the Age of Democracy: * The French Revolution---from the storming of the Bastille to the guillotining of the King * The revolution's leaders Danton, Desmoulins, Robespierre, Saint-Just---all cut down by the reign of terror they inaugurated. * Napoleon's meteoric rise---from the provincial Corsican military student to the Emperor commanding the largest army in history * Napoleon's fall---his army's destruction in the snows of Russia, his exile to Elba, escape and reconquest of the throne, and ultimate defeat at Waterloo by the combined forces of Europe. * The birth of romanticism and the dawning of a new age of active democracy and a rising middle class, laying the foundation for our own era.

Review of 'The story of civilization' on 'Goodreads'

Reviewing this book would be a monumental task, as I discovered when I sat down to attempt the same. The notes/highlights themselves have an estimated reading time of 86 minutes - to be able to build a cohesive narrative out of those scribbles and do justice to this masterpiece would be a fool's errand - and yet this is only the first 10% of the whole series. Oh my!

Until I get around to do that, please take my word for its brilliance and make some time to read it.

reviewed Rousseau and Revolution by Will Durant (The Story of Civilization, #10)

None

Perhaps one of the most interesting periods in European history, this book focuses on the latter half of the 18th century. From the reigns of "enlightened" monarchs like Catherine the Great and Frederick the Great, the lives of the later Philosophes like Voltaire and Rousseau, and the birth of the romantic movement and the American Revolution (from the English perspective), the effects of this period are so far-reaching into modern life, it would be hard to be indifferent to this history. As always Will and Ariel focus on all aspects of society, from politics and philosophy to lifestyle and art, painting a vivid picture of what was like to live in the period. Perhaps this was one of my favorite in the series since I was more interested in the biographies, but regardless, 5/5 highly recommended.

reviewed Our Oriental Heratige by Will Durant (The Story of Civilization, #1)

None

Meticulously researched and very enjoyable to read, this book focuses on the economic, political, moral, ideas, and artistic aspects of cultures and civilizations and is less concerned of dates and war. Since it covers such a broad range it serves mostly as a survey to give a sense of the scale of history, and provide a entry point to learn more. The Durants are great story tellers, and their occasional comments are sometimes hilarious and sometimes quite deep. While many of the ideas are dated, they constantly check their perspectives disclaim their terms, and if you keep in mind that this was written in 1935, I think its quite ahead of its time.

Extremely dense in information though a great presentation. Even if history is not really my passion it's good to learn so much about these roots of our modern civilization.
