Nolan Grant is sixteen, gay, and (definitely) still a virgin. He's never had a boyfriend, or even been kissed. It's not like Penn Valley is brimming with prospects. And when his big sister stages an elaborate “prom-posal” so Nolan can ask out his not-so-secret crush, Nolan freezes. He's saved from further embarrassment by bad boy Bern, who, for his own reasons, offers to fake-date Nolan.

Nolan thinks it's the perfect way to get Daphne off his back and spend the rest of the year drawing narwhals, tending to plants, and avoiding whatever died under his bed a few weeks ago. What he doesn't think about is Bern's ex-girlfriend, who seriously wants to kill him.

YA romance, queer romance, and fake relationships are all things I'll eat up with a giant spoon, so it's no surprise to anyone that I enjoyed this. Major, major points for an out bisexual dude character (there are so few). I loved all the major characters but I did experience a weird phenomenon where I couldn't remember any of the minor characters, either because they were forgettable or just so briefly in the book. I kept finding myself staring at a name I didn't remember and having to flip back pages to try to remember who Tamara or Zamir or Arlo was. Eventually I just gave up and accepted that it probably didn't matter that much to the overall plot. A fun, light read; the perfect antidote for days when the darkness of the world threatens to swallow you whole.
