I found the translation a bit choppy. It left me with the feeling that it was translated literally as opposed to figuratively. This makes it much more difficult to understand.

Throughout the book, I found myself daydreaming over the topics. Water in water on the atomic level? To what purpose could sacrifice serve? Is the spiritual world more important than reality? Why and how would these behaviors evolve? Who benefits from such behaviors?

At the end, Bataille stated the intent of the book was not to express his own views, but to help you clarify yours. I think this was done exceptionally well. It is like an amplifier for the mind. Because the mind is so volatile, it merits multiple readings.
