The Last Policeman, Hank Palace, is back. The asteroid is now a lot closer, society is falling apart faster every day and yet he is picking up another mystery. This time investigating only a missing person for an old friend. Of course he turns up more craziness, that is happening during humanity's final days. I am still enjoying the series a lot. The books aren't too long, but quite gripping.

If you enjoyed the first one, pick this one up too. If you haven't read The Last Policeman, start there.

An unbelievably quick read. I had been in a rut of failed #2 in the series books, this broke my streak! I am ready to begin volume 3 tonight. The story continues... the world is nearing a climatic point. Excellent work Mr. Winters.

It's frustrating in mysteries when the detective goes off on a hunch without much to back it up, but things work out anyway. It's just too far from how life really works. One of the things Winters gets right is to let his sleuth's impulses and instincts lead him astray from time to time with realistic consequences. That, along with the likeable characters and an interesting hook, make this series worthwhile. A step above most popular mysteries.
