book 3 maintains the essence of the series but manages to stray away enough from what kept me captivated in 1 and 2 such that i feel satiated to stop here. for now, anyway (and thank the guidestars for that!)
What can I say, these are still so good, and I am just eating them up. A lot of trauma in this one in ways that I did not anticipate, although that seems redundant because even once I felt like I got the secret of these books, they continue to add layers.
I have very much enjoyed the Steerswoman series from Rosemary Kirstein. It's a really well-imagined, interesting world, and the over-arching story of the whole series is being told at just the right pace to keep you intrigued. The story of this book specifically, though, is a little slow and it doesn't really come together until towards the end. But the last part of the book is tense and the revelations intriguing.
What I particularly like about this series is that each book is its own story. You definitely benefit from having read the previous books, but each separate novel comes to a satisfying conclusion, rather than spending the last 20% setting up the next volume.

Okay so this book was very different and unexpected.
The first half began very similarly to the previous books. Rowan had come to a town to attempt to look for clues and was met with a cast of many townsfolk all common but interesting in their own way. She attempts to socialize with them and deal with their politics before she realizes that something is afoot.
This is where things start to get interesting when Janus is introduced and starts a chain of very strange events.
The second half of the book takes a wild turn where Rowan now comes into contact with a truly alien civilization. Far different from humanity and the expected behaviors of humans. It was so fascinating and strange and also so very believable at the same time. I just couldn’t put the book down!
The end was so very mind blowing as you understand …

And there is something much greater happening in the world than the cozy Inner Lands story led me to believe at the start of the series. I am very interested and excited to continue the series as there are so many interesting ways the story can unfold.
Overall, definitely my favorite book in the series so far!
A bit weaker than the first two books. There was just too much exploration of a single topic. I think I know why the author did it, but I still didn't care for it. Still, a good book.
This series is amazing. The characters are smart and complex. The world is rich and strange. I couldn't put it down!
