The Emperor's Children is a richly drawn, brilliantly observed novel of fate and fortune--about the intersections in the lives of three friends, now on the cusp of their thirties, making their way--and not-- in New York City. In this tour de force, the celebrated author Claire Messud brings to life a city, a generation, and the way we live in this moment. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Interesting. Good writing and good characterizations, once you accepted that you didn't much like any of the characters. It was very well received in NYC and well reviewed in all the NY papers, which is a bit odd, because we all took it as a slam against the culture of that city. Unless maybe that's just a viewpoint of our own particular culture. We had fun imagining what the novel would have been like if it had been set on the left coast, say in LA, Seattle or Portland.

Wonderful...not sure I how I feel about the ending, though. Also, during the "first act," when the characters were being introduced, I definitely felt more affinity for the befuddled parents of the 30 year-old main characters than for their children. Guess that means I've definitely left my youth behind me.
