Barcelona, 1957. It is the week before Christmas in the Sempere & Sons bookshop. Daniel Sempere is happily married to Bea, and they have a son, whilst their partner Fermin is soon to marry Bernarda. Luck, finally, seems to be smiling on them. Then a mysterious person enters the shop, buys the most expensive volume on display — an illustrated edition of The Count of Monte Cristo — and inscribes in it the words 'For Fermin Romero de Torres, who came back from among the dead and holds the key to the future. 13'. Who is he? What does he want? The answer lies in a terrible secret, hidden for two decades. ..a tale of imprisonment, betrayal, murder- and love, leading back into the heart of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books. --back cover

I read this book about 18 months ago, and somehow never got around to writing a review.

Then last week I read the prequel, [b:The Angel's Game|22474439|The Angel's Game|Carlos Ruiz Zafón|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1402880320s/22474439.jpg|41916978], and realised that I did not remember enough of this one to write the review, so I read it again. Neither of them matched up to the original, [b:The shadow of the wind|1232|The Shadow of the Wind (The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, #1)|Carlos Ruiz Zafón|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1344545047s/1232.jpg|3209783]. [The Angel's Game] started off quite well, but in the end it degenerated into gratuitous and pointless violence. And [The Prisoner of Heaven] left too many loose ends. The picture of the man with the eight-year-old girl, mentioned in [b:The Angel's Game|22474439|The Angel's Game|Carlos Ruiz Zafón|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1402880320s/22474439.jpg|41916978], gets a mention here too, but is never explained. Perhaps they will be tied up in a sequel, perhaps not.

I compared [The Shadow of the Wind] to …

Review of 'El prisionero del cielo' on 'Storygraph'
