The year is 3589, fifteen hundred years after Commonwealth forces barely staved off human extinction in a war against the alien Prime. Thanks to the gaiafield, a neural entanglement wired into most humans, Inigo’s dreams are shared by hundreds of millions–and a religion, the Living Dream, is born, with Inigo as its prophet. But then he vanishes.

Suddenly there is a new wave of dreams. Dreams broadcast by an unknown Second Dreamer serve as the inspiration for a massive Pilgrimage into the Void. But there is a chance that by attempting to enter the Void, the pilgrims will trigger a catastrophic expansion, an accelerated devourment phase that will swallow up thousands of worlds.

And thus begins a desperate race to find Inigo and the mysterious Second Dreamer. Some seek to prevent the Pilgrimage; others to speed its progress–while within the Void, a supreme entity has turned its gaze, for the first time, outward.

un univers très riche

Je me suis plongée dans ce roman et j'ai eu du mal à le lâcher. C'est un univers d'une richesse extraordinaire, un space-opéra, avec des intrigues poltiques, religieuses et énormément d'actions. On y trouve des formes d'humanités qui ne sont plus soumises à la mort et au vieillissement, qui ont des améliorations cybernétiques extraordinaires, qui ont dépassé les limites du corps, des systèmes politiques, économiques, philosophiques variés et des civilisations extraterrestres. Le Vide est au centre de l'intrigue, des passions, des rêves et des désirs des différentes factions. Il est inaccessible aux civilisations qui vivent à l'extérieur, et en même temps, l'un de ses habitants communique sans même le savoir avec certaines personnes. La galerie de personnages est très riche et ils sont tellement nombreux que parfois je m'y suis perdue. Je pense que j'aurais été plus à l'aise si j'avais lu d'autres romans de Peter Hamilton se déroulant dans cet univers. Différentes intrigues alternent et se complètent en un écheveau très complexe. Je me suis posée beaucoup de questions, j'ai eu quelques réponses, mais surtout des hypothèses. Nous n'avons pas ou peu de réponses à la fin du tome 1. J'ai d'ailleurs trouvé la fin un peu brutale. Mes deux personnages préférés sont Aaron et Edeard. Le premier est un agent très performant, aux améliorations très perfectionnées à qui on a effacé la mémoire et qui ne recule devant rien pour accomplir sa mission, sans savoir pour qui. Le deuxième est un jeune homme, habitant du Querencia, dans le Vide, aux pouvoirs psychiques très puissants. La technologie très avancée aussi bien dans les améliorations cybernétiques que dans les voyages spatiaux, me fait penser à du cyberpunk, sans le côté dystopique... quoi que ...
