This is the first in the Annals of the Western Shore trilogy: Gifts, Voices, and Powers. I accidentally read Powers first. I've liked both of the these, and plan to read Voices next. She's created a rich and interesting world (no surprise), with gender roles, community and economic structures that are a shift from the usual assumptions.
