The Ties That Bind

Cayna is slowly adjusting to her new reality in Leadale and all the ways it’s changed over the past two hundred years, from when it was only a game. Right as the seventeen-year-old starts to find her footing, though, a trip to the northern nation of Helshper brings her face-to-face with a famous elf merchant who claims to be her grandson! Just how much has Cayna’s in-game “family” expanded in the two centuries since she last logged on?

This felt notably weaker than the first volume. It hardly feels like anything happened; Cayna just kind of wandered around and did things and kept getting distracted from her goal and eventually the book ended. Making cakes with skills was apparently the big thing this book, considering how often it came up.

There were some events that probably should have been big deals... but they weren't. The book just kind of moves on without addressing world-changing revelations. I'm a bit miffed about that.

The writing still feels pretty weak, although at least I didn't find any weirdly broken sentences this time.

Generally not a great entry to the series. I'll probably keep reading because I'm still intrigued by the world and how Cayna fits into it (or not, as the case may be), but this mostly felt like it was trying to be filler. Kind of disappointed.
