For five grand a month and a million dollar chaser, Roger Mulligan didn't care how crazy the old geezer is. All he had to do was keep Joseph Perry Shackleford alive and keep him from squandering the estate for a year.

They didn't tell him about the pixies.

A surprisingly cozy read

With the back-of-the-book description I was expecting the main character's struggles with the old man & with magic in general to be the main focus, but those were nearly non-events.

Instead, I got a cozy with 4 main plots:

  • A grasping niece trying to steal the estate by getting the old man declared incompetent

  • An old man trying to find a blood relative with magical talent to take over the house when he dies

  • A cursed artifact that is trying to hasten that death, or at least senility as it steals the old man's memories, and

Delightful

5 stars

This story by @nlowell@zirk.us is simply delightful. I haven't finished a book so quickly in ages, and stayed up past my bedtime to get to the end. I found the story and pacing much like Roger finds his butler duties: satisfying and relaxing, like enjoying a hot cup of fresh coffee in the morning. The ending feels just right. Adding this book to my "cozy go-tos" list and I look forward to enjoying the story again and again. Additionally, Tom Taylorson does a fantastic job of performing the story, distinguishing the character voices expertly, and matching the pacing of the story itself.

I was intrigued just by the title of this book when I saw it. I looked at the reviews to see if people thought it was any good. The first one I read was from an incensed person. They were livid that nothing happened in the book except meals being served. Everyone else who reviewed the book absolutely loved it. This sounded like my kind of story so I took a chance on it.I adored this book!I absolutely recommend it on audio. The narration and the story are so peaceful. The first reviewer was only sort of wrong. Things do happen but it is slow and that is beautiful. I say this as a person who tends to hate stories that don't get to the point. But this was such a delight that when the plot started moving along towards the end, I was a little disappointed.Roger Mulligan …
