Review of 'Romance Amer Commun' on Goodreads

3 stars

Interviews with a broad range of members and officials from the Communist Party, the passion and single-minded purpose that sustained them in it through contradictions and constant organizing, and the recovery from disillusion following their exit whether from the 20th Congress revelations or as late as the invasion of Czechoslovakia. Does a good job of organizing the central narrative above (based on the author's own arc) with dispelling a monolithic view of American Communists, lots of backgrounds and ongoing motivations, and widely varying reactions and aftermaths, though the interview vignette form is disjointed at points.
