Written as the memoir of a British lieutenant, and based on real-life events, this historically and psychologically rich thriller perfectly captures the tension as a team of soldiers in Egypt during World War II attempt to assassinate German Field Marshall Rommel, the infamous "Desert Fox."
Really fun novel about the LRDG - the Long Range Desert Group - as they pestered Rommel during World War 2's North African Campaign. They went so far as the design a plan to kill Rommel himself, although as anyone would know, it wasn't pulled off. Alfred Molina was a tremendous narrator.
I was going to give this a 4 star rating, but the end of this book was absolutely phenomenal. The honor between soldiers was very moving.
I especially enjoyed Pressfield's description of the desert. It reminded me in many ways of how Jack London wrote about the arctic.
