I like my UF heroines complicated and with loads of bagage. Annabelle has it all, childhood drama, she's lots of death and destruction, and she tries to cope with it the only way she knows how: alcohol and sleeping pills. I can understand that. I can even symphatize with it.
Why is it then I hated her from the beginning?
It was the writing. Annabelle's inner monologue was mechanical, a staccato of ramblings about every thing not relating to what she was doing at that time. It was annoying to read.
The world building also lacked in my opinion. So we got mutated fairies that can kill you in an instant, but it is never really explained how and why Yes, there was a terrorist attack on a chemical plant, and hurricane Katrina didn't help much either, but I feel the fairies just came out of thin air, just because …

I kept on going, hoping it would get better, but halfway into chapter 9 I gave up.
