Not badly written and the author manages to avoid the "glee" with which some authors write about the zombie apocalypse. Don't get me wrong, I get the silly dark humor of this genre, but when the story has the undertone of, "wouldn't it be great if most of the people died and I could run around with my Uzi and kill all the silly liberals who want to take my gun?" I tend to stop reading.
I think this story has some emotional reality, but I can't help feeling that the author was writing about a class of people she didn't really understand. Except for the end, it was a zombie apocalypse with hardly any zombies and I think the characters were a little slow on the uptake. In the early days of the zombie apocalypse genre a writer might be able to take as much time as she does …

In the early days of the zombie apocalypse genre a writer might be able to take as much time as she does to get people to realize zombies exist, but these days with the popularity of The Walking Dead. I think characters need to figure things out quickly or readers lose interest.
