This was the first real book that I ever read in Spanish. At times I'd be able to fly through pages without needing to look up anything, and other times I'd need to look up more than 5 words in a single paragraph (though this was usually during the recipes).
I really enjoyed the story. It made learning fun. There were times when I was really surprised. I'm so used to getting all my Spanish from academic resources where everything is nice and happy. "John and Sally have lunch at the beach" and stuff like that. So when I read some of the more horrific stuff (like what happens to Roberto and Chencha) I was shocked.
The only thing that really confused me was when time would skip around. Maybe it was harder for me to follow that we were jumping into the future or the past because I'm not …
