Tools for Conviviality is a 1973 book by Ivan Illich about the proper use of technology. It was published only two years after his previous book Deschooling Society. In this new work Illich generalized the themes that he had previously applied to the field of education: the institutionalization of specialized knowledge, the dominant role of technocratic elites in industrial society, and the need to develop new instruments for the reconquest of practical knowledge by the average citizen. He wrote that "[e]lite professional groups ... have come to exert a 'radical monopoly' on such basic human activities as health, agriculture, home-building, and learning, leading to a 'war on subsistence' that robs peasant societies of their vital skills and know-how. Review of 'Ivan Illich et la société conviviale' on 'Goodreads'

Un bon livre pour comprendre la pensée d'Illich et aborder le sujet de la décroissance par le biais d'un corpus d'œuvres d'un auteur (donc en l'occurrence Illich).
L'ouvrage commence par une biographie d'Ivan Illich, puis une présentation de sa pensée, et enfin un recueil choisi de texte à lui (dont un texte inédit en français).
On voit dans le livre l'évolution de la pensée d'Illich au fil de sa vie. Il critiquait le développement, et ses réflexions là dessus sont intéressantes (comme quoi le "développement durable" est une oxymore car le développement est par nature anti-écologique). Il propose une manière de vivre low tech, puis revient là dessus plus tard dans sa vie, en disant que finalement nous sommes dépendant du système dans lequel nous vivons et que nous n'avons donc pas la responsabilité d'agir en opposition avec le système.
Il y a néanmoins des éléments très "what the fuck" …
