I somehow love and don’t like this book at the same time. I’m a huge fan of the Outlander series and I really like Lord John a lot. This book had kind of a really interesting story to tell but it was a bit disappointing how the end was narrated so fast on the ship and only there. Also sometimes it was hard to follow which person was involved in the intrigues.
The conclusion itself was really impressive and I didn’t guess this web of lies. Still it’s a little below the adventures or Jamie and Claire. I’ll still go on with the Lord John series of course - it’s remarkable to finally have a homosexual protagonist who does not follow any queer stereotypes! Bravo!

I had read this about 10 years ago before the thought of reading the Outlander books was even a glimmer in my eye, and apparently I don't remember word 1 of it, because this was all new to me. I did find it overly long in places - a complaint I have with the outlander books as well - and I tend to like mysteries where the reader at least has a shot of figuring out whodunnit before the end of the book, but overall I liked this and would likely read the next in the series.
