It reads very much like a first novel, and I can see why her agent told her to write something else, but the story of an urbane daughter struggling with the discovery that the people she grew up admiring (Atticus Finch!) in her Southern hometown are unrepentant bigots is strikingly timely.

It's going to take me a bit of mulling over and a reread or two before I can truly review this book. Lee's prose is beautiful enough to hold this muddle of reminiscences and rants together. There is a lot of food for thought about race relations, fallen idols and disillusionment.

Our beloved precocious Scout has grown into a woman who can be naive to a fault one minute and an insightful fury the next. Her struggles to come to terms with the South of the early Civil Rights Era are a challenging read. We are still grappling with the same demons today. This book is not an easy read but I think it's a worthwhile one.
