The Gnome King reviewed Can You Hear the Music by Sandra Farris
Review of 'Can You Hear the Music' on 'Goodreads'
5 stars
This book has one of the worst covers I've seen, a blurry photo and a title font that I can barely read, it's not good for somebody with crap eyesight like myself. The blurb could do with some work too, Goodreads has recommended this to me a couple of times and I think I've seen it in a giveaway, each time I've ignored it as it looked dull and from the beginning of the blurb it seems like a chick-lit book. I've never heard of the author either. I've only read it because of a reading challenge where I had to read a book with the word "Music" in the title, which is where I noticed this time around that there were hobo's riding the rails. So you can see starting the book I was slightly biased.

But I've been blown away by how good this book was, an absolutely heart-warming tale of a young girl riding the rails with a hobo. The writing is simple, very reminiscent of Tom Sawyer, and done in such a way you can pick up the accents and you're transported into the story. You can't help but love the characters and you're at the mercy of Farris as the story unfolds. I almost found myself hissing and booing at the aunt and laughing out loud at some of the scenes on the young girls travels.
If this book got a new eye-catching cover and a rewrite for the blurb, then maybe it would get picked up by more people. This book has been the biggest surprise for me this year and I recommend it to everybody, give it a go, I reckon you won't be disappointed.
