Was this actually written on LSD as it seems? Colin Charteris is the messiah to a drug-changed and war-torn Europe (can anyone spot the shade of Jerry Cornelius around here?). Aldiss has been going back to his strange obsessions ever since, a half-real central Europe of dingy hotels and car accidents and paranoid men and women. The language is impacted and punning and reveals something weird, I don’t know what. ‘Kerouacs’ are a noun and ‘maureen’ is a colour.
