You had me at Bowie. I bought this because I wanted to read it before recommending it to my Bowie- loving, college-attending, art-student daughter. I get a bit nervous before reading a coming-of-age story written from a male point of view. Sometimes they are a little too perverse for my liking. It turns out there was no need to worry. Parts were like they were my own journal entries from when I was this age. Other times I was frustrated because the characters deflated to paper doll dimensions. It turns out there was a purpose to that character-based, Noah-centric setting that practically has no vegetation or dimensional world. That setting was a temporary period of time in the book and intentional. This book is quoteable. It is a trip worth taking with nods to movies like Say Anything and the Never-Ending Story. I'm sure my daughter will love it. If she only had time to read it instead of living it. I love the pop-culture references such as Gilmore Girls, Wes Anderson and Home Alone. There is even a lonely old man neighbor just like Home Alone. Noah would be friends with any or all of my favorite John Green or John Hughes characters. My one small complaint was the portrayal of the intelligent, pale, home-schooled kid. I just once would like the home-schooled kid to be tan with a swimmer's physique. Even if it is less likely.
