Isn't as fun to read as Ready Player One.
More dead-on 80's nostalgia packaged in an entertaining story that pays homage by name to darker predecessors like Strange Days and Brainstorm.
2.5 stars but I'm rounding up so I don't penalize the score.
Me encanto.
While I really liked Ready Player One, this book seems like it was more of a sequel for sequel's sake. it lost most of the great character development and new ideas of the first book, and just wasn't as enjoyable to read.
Note that I listened to the audiobook, rather than reading the book.
After listening to the first few pages I wanted to stop. Wade was such a dork making such obviously stupid but significant choices. However, the tension soon subsided during the long introduction of the scene (including a recap of the significant facts from the first book). In the end, the book was filled with many twists and turns and ended up merging the game world with the real world in some pretty ingenious ways - like how the real world controlled avatars sitting in rigs that controlled real-world robots.
Additionally, the book had multiple surprises that changed the perspective and opened up new ideas about saving memories and capturing the concept that ultimately our being/soul is just physics so why not be able to capture it and reconstitute it in an online world.

My only criticism was that the speed with which Samantha (Art3mis) forgave wade without any reconciliation seemed a bit silly, but in the end, it wasn't that significant a piece of the puzzle that it can be overlooked.

Ready Player Two.
The New York Times Best Sellers,

It's telling that I was able to skip over the infuriatingly continuous large clumps of references without losing the thread of the story. Undisciplined and badly in need of editing, and yet there is something still compelling inside.
Starts a bit rough, as the author spends the first quarter of the book trying to deal with the stuff from the first book that is dated in 2020's "social media is terrible" world. But once that is out of the way there is an amusing adventure, just like in the original.
Some of the messaging is ham-fisted, but once again it is important to remember that this is a children's book. It isn't meant to be nuanced.
DNF at 51%.
Usually, a book has a plot. Even if I don't like the characters, I can usually tell you what the basic plot was about. This one completely eluded me and not in a good way either.
The main character is supposed to solve some puzzles or something but the book was so filled with ads I soon forgot where we were at or what we were doing. No. Couldn't make it. I tried. I really did. I just couldn't make it all the way through.
It took a few tries of picking this up to finish it. I really wanted to enjoy it, but it is very disjointed and like being around triva people that always have to add one last useless factoid to every conversation. The descriptions of playing video games and walking through movies gets tiring quickly.
