This was good. I’m not sure I’d call it ‘gothic’ - most of the elements were there, but it lacked the building sense of dread I associate with gothic novels. The story was well crafted, and the required suspension of disbelief came easily. I also really liked the way the venerated grieving widower was revealed to be less virtuous than his admirers believed, although his love for Ada was probably real in her lifetime. Not sure the ending satisfied me though - it was a bit rushed, and I’m not sure I understand what the protagonists accomplished. But overall, I enjoyed the book and it was something different from what I’ve been reading.
