Not the best of Scudder. The not-actually-licensed PI looks for a Midwestern innocent who went to New York and disappeared. Meanwhile, an acquaintance from AA dies in what police think is an accident but something doesn't fit. This wasn't as good as it gets, by any means, but Scudder is always good company.
