I continue to enjoy this revival series from Black Horse. In this second volume, we still see a young Conan. Sure, he is quite the thief and very cunning, but he is still fairly inexperienced and learning fast. So, I find it interesting to find how Conan evolves over time. In this volume, he meets Janissa the Widowmaker, an assassin who works for the Bone Woman, and he makes a new enemy in Thoth Amon, the sorcerer. Conan enjoys life to the fullest, but he also has to rely on his cunning and smarts to overcome obstacles. From possibly being framed for a murder he did not commit to facing the dark sorcerer, Conan stands strong. If you like this character and his stories, you will enjoy this volume. It is clear the publisher takes good care of Howard's creation, and the art works very well with the series as …

This was a very enjoyable and entertaining read. Once I started it, it was very easy to continue to the end. The stories are good, and it is interesting, to me at least, to see a young Conan who is still learning his way around the world. This time he makes his way to the City of Thieves, where he starts to make his way as a thief in his own right. Eventually, he decides to attempt to steal a jewel from the Tower of the Elephant, a feat no other thief would dare. But not all is as it seems. There is magic and evil involved. The art complements the stories in this series very well; you get the feel of Conan's setting. Dark Horse has done a good job on these volumes. If you are a fan of Conan, you will enjoy these, even if they seem to …

This definitely catches the spirit of Robert E. Howard. If you are expecting the Conan of the films, this is not it (although it is said the films do catch a bit of the ambiance, but I digress). The compilation is divided in short chapters, which make it very easy to read, and the art just works well to bring Conan's world to life. The main story is Conan's search for the land of Hyperborea, which his grandfather told him about, describing it as a paradise on Earth. Of course, as often happens, when you get there, paradise is not quite what it seems. Overall, a pretty good fantasy story. I am glad Dark Horse is bringing these new compilations of their updated Conan series. Busiek is adapting and expanding on Howard's work, and it works well. I will definitely be looking for other volumes.
