A largish crowd. There was a general interest in the subject matter, and fascination with all of the work that had to be done to exist in the 30's. But a disappointment in the actual writing. And really, all of our families went through the same sorts of work and hardships during the depression, and had similar, or more compelling, stories. Which launched a series of reminiscences and stories about our parents or grandparents, of growing up in small towns, or of ingrained communities in villages, where everyone knew you and whatever you did would get home before you did. Of the duty of parents to be strict with their children, and the God-given right to spoil their grandchildren. The structure and control enveloping children today, leaving them no time to play on their own. And the way we separate ourselves from the community around us, safe in the protective …
