Review of "the witch doesn't burn in this one" on 'Goodreads'
4 stars
This volume starts with a "trigger warning", and touches on some tough themes (sexual abuse, gender violence, eating disorders and more). Be aware of this if you decide to read it. As the trigger warning says, practice self-care before, during and after reading this book".
There is a lot of (justified) rage in these poems, especially in the first part. Often poems make use of typographical elements, in addition to the words themselves, which I greatly enjoyed.
My favorite part of the book is the last section, titled "the ashes". It contains some of the more hopeful and uplifting pieces in the book. One gem:
when
this war ends
at last,
follow me
back out
into
the
quiet of the
day,
&
with your
tired palms
scoop up
a pile of the
rubble,
mourn it as it
falls through
your fingers,
& then
keep going.
there's much work to do. …
