The author took a long and winding road in weaving this tale. Phronsie is a love child, born out of Woodstock and her origin story plays a large part in her identity. Was she born of love and cosmic clashing, a work of magic? Or was she a mistake, an accident, something that caused heartache to her young and unwitting sperm and egg donors. Phronsie's birth mother is a believer in magic and her father is as no-nonsense and practical as they come. These two sides are present in Phronsie herself, and as she grows from child to teen to adult, she regularly wars with herself over this issue. Does she believe in love? Does she believe in magic? I found myself (repeatedly) frustrated with her choice in love interests. I enjoyed her witchy mama's words of wisdom the most.
