Not quite what I expected. It's more like a standard narrative history with an imaginative filling in of the details than an historical novel. The bits with the enlisted men and lower ranked officers are more interesting than the bits with the high command. There are enough memoirs and histories already that cover the high command such that a fictional look at them really isn't that necessary, or interesting.

Overall a decent book, but if it was a choice between reading this or reading an actual history of the period covered, I'd choose an actual history (Rick Atkinson's An Army At Dawn followed by his The Day of Battle would be good choices for someone interested in doing so).
