We missed the film when it came to our local cinema so when I spotted a second-hand copy of the book, I snapped it up! Revolutionary Road is a stunning portrayal of the frustrations and shattered dreams of a young married couple living in suburbia. It is set in 1950s America but is just as relevant in present day Britain. The Wheelers are convinced that they are better than their suburban neighbours and are just marking time until something great comes along, never seeming to realise that they need to create this greatness themselves. Yates has a wonderful insight into the minds of both his main protagonists and his supporting cast so every character is completely believable. Although neither April nor Frank are particularly sympathetic characters, I was gripped by their story from start to finish.
