David B. reviewed The sun king by Nancy Mitford

Versailles as lunatic asylum. For one who didn't know anything about Louis XIV, this was a great intro to the man, his family and courtiers. Funny at times, it left me agog at many others -- the society of the ancien regime might has well have been on Mars, so alien to modernity does it seem in many respects.
Notes for Kindle Paperwhite readers:
In the absence of a dramatis personae or family tree, it's pretty easy to lose track of who's who. Recommend keeping a crib sheet as you go along, or resigning yourself to heavy usage of the "Search" function.
The Kindle port was just crappy enough to give my "Report Content Error" finger a good workout but not so crappy as to make the book unreadable.
